Mechanism of Action

D-Chiro-Inositol (D-Chiro-Ins) is a secondary messenger in the insulinsignaling pathway. D-Chiro-Ins modulates insulin secretion, themitochondrial respiratory chain, and glycogen storage. Due to these actions D-Chiro-Ins has been proposed to correct defective insulin function in a varietyof conditions characterized by metabolic dysfunction, such as polycystic ovarysyndrome (PCOS), obesity, gestational diabetes and fat accumulation atmenopause. Since it is unclear whether D-Chiro-Ins directly acts onadipocytes. DCI administration had beneficial effects on ovulation, anthropometric and metabolic markers in PCOS women by enhancing insulin. The effects of metformin in improving insulin action in PCOS women was achieved though the release of DCI-IPG mediators. D-Chiro-Ins is a known regulator of insulin secretion in pancreatic ?-cells where it also acts as a second messenger in the insulin receptor signaling pathway. D-Chiro-Ins also modulates the storage of sugar as glycogen and the respiratory chain for the production of ATP in rat adipocytes. Inositols act as second messengers for insulin, and their deficiency contributes to the various features of PCOS. Correction of MI(myo-inositol) and DCI (D-chiro-inositol) deficiency simultaneously, by using MDI (metered dose inhalers )therapy, may help in alleviating metabolic, menstrual/ovulatory, and cutaneous hyper androgenic features of PCOS.
