Respiratory Tract Infections, Peritonitis and Other Intra-abdominal Infections, Bacterial Septicemia, Infections of the Skin and Skin Structures, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Endometritis, and Other Infections of the Female Genital Tract, Urinary Tract Infections

Parenteral Susceptible infections Adult: As sodium: 2-4 g daily in 2 divided doses, increased to 12 g daily in 2-4 divided doses for severe infections given as deep IM or IV infusion.

Renal impairment: 1-2 g daily.

Hepatic impairment: Max for hepatic impairment or biliary obstruction: 4 g daily.

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin.

History of penicillin allergy; renal or hepatic impairment; pregnancy, lactation; cystic fibrosis, clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, hemorrhage. Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms.

Disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol. Potentiates anticoagulants. Potentially Fatal: Enhances nephrotoxicity by aminoglycosides and furosemide.

Skin rash, urticaria; eosinophilia, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting; phloebitis; hypoprothrombinaemia; superinfection. Potentially Fatal: Neuromuscular hypersensitivity; nephrotoxicity.

Cefoperazone binds to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell wall, thus inhibiting biosynthesis and arresting cell wall assembly resulting in bacterial cell death.
