Indications

Osteoporosis, Osteopenia

Adult Dose

Adults: Prevention of Osteoporosis: 500–600 mg elemental calcium daily in divided doses. Treatment of Osteoporosis: 1000–1200 mg elemental calcium daily in divided doses. Supplement with vitamin D (800–1000 IU/day) to optimize calcium metabolism.

Administration

Take with meals for better absorption.

Contra Indications

Hypercalcemia or hypercalciuria. Severe renal impairment or chronic kidney disease. Known hypersensitivity to bovine-derived products.

Precautions

Adequate hydration to prevent urinary calcium precipitation. Avoid concurrent use with high-dose calcium supplements. Monitoring Parameters: Serum calcium (to avoid hypercalcemia). Monitor for signs of hypercalcemia (lethargy, arrhythmias). Renal function tests (to prevent nephrotoxicity). Bone mineral density (BMD): Periodically assess therapeutic response.

Pregnancy-Lactation

Not Classi Pregnancy: Not officially classified by FDA; generally considered safe when used as a calcium supplement within recommended limits. Lactation: Likely safe; calcium supplementation helps meet increased maternal demands during breastfeeding.

Interactions

Reduced absorption with antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). May interact with tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, reducing their efficacy. Increased risk of hypercalcemia with concurrent vitamin D or thiazide diuretics.

Adverse Effects

Common: Gastrointestinal discomfort (bloating, nausea, constipation). Rare: Hypercalcemia Nephrolithiasis
