Indications
Indicated for the treatment of
Benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Adult Dose
One softgel capsule one to two times daily.
Contra Indications
Saw Palmetto is not indicated for advanced BPH with severe urinary
retention. It should not be used without first ruling out prostate cancer.
Precautions
Saw Palmetto might slow blood clotting. There is some concern that it might
cause extra bleeding during and after surgery. Stop using saw palmetto at
least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
Pregnancy-Lactation
Saw palmetto extract should not be used during pregnancy. Saw palmetto extract should also be avoided during breastfeeding due to a lack of available information.
Interactions
Saw Palmetto might slow blood clotting. Taking Saw Palmetto along with
medications that also slow clotting including Aspirin, Clopidogrel,
Enoxaparin, Heparin, Warfarin etc. might increase the chances of bruising
and bleeding.
Adverse Effects
Rare case of gastrointestinal disturbance has been reported. Ingestion on an
empty stomach may cause nausea. Hypertension was reported in 3.1%
patients taking Saw Palmetto extract.
Mechanism of Action
Saw Palmetto inhibits 5 ?-reductase enzyme thus minimizes the conversion of Testosterone to DHT. Ultimately pathologic prostate growth is inhibited. Pygeum helps to shrink the prostate. Ginseng strengthen the immune system and improve symptoms of erectile dysfunction and Zinc helps to suppress tumor growth, especially in the prostate.
