Indications

The drug is used for the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cranberry is also used for neurogenic bladder (a bladder disease).

Adult Dose

For Adult: 1 capsule twice daily.

Contra Indications

The drug is contraindicated if patient has any hypersensitivity to it.

Precautions

Cranberry might increase the risk of kidney stones. If you have a history of kidney stones, avoid taking cranberry. The patients who are allergic to salicylic acid should avoid cranberry.

Pregnancy-Lactation

Cranberry is safe to consume during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Interactions

Cranberry may interact with Warfarin, diazepam, diclofenac and phenytoin.

Adverse Effects

Cranberry is generally safe for most people. However, at high dose it may cause some side effects such as mild stomach upset and diarrhea.

Mechanism of Action

Cranberry is a small, evergreen shrub grown throughout North America. Cranberries contain a potent compound which is known as proanthocyanidin. This compound possesses special anti-adherence properties which have been found to prevent bacteria from adhering to cells located in the urinary tract and bladder. This not only helps to prevent urinary tract infections from reoccurring but consuming cranberry extract supplements can also help fight off the infection quicker.
